Is Salt Water Good For The Skin? – Here’s The Answers!

Is salt water good for the skin?

Salt water is good for the skin because it contains several minerals that are bactericidal – and have a good healing process for skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, especially in the Dead Sea where it is treated. The salt level in the Dead Sea is incredibly high and rich in minerals.

But too much bathing in salt water is also not good for the skin as it is very dehydrating, especially with sun exposure. You can also make your own salt water at home.

Salt water is found in our oceans and in some lakes. How wonderful is it not to swim in the sea on a hot summer day? But how does the skin really feel after bathing in salt water? Salt water can be both good and bad for your skin.

What is salt water?

Salt water is water with high levels of dissolved salt found in the oceans and some lakes. In addition to containing salt, the sea also contains minerals and zinc which are good for our body.

The Dead Sea is the sea with the highest content of salt and minerals – Dead Sea salt is often used to relieve eczema and psoriasis.

Salt water is dehydrating (for the skin)

It is not dangerous for your skin if you bathe in salt water. The only thing salt water does is dry out the skin. Therefore, it is important that you shower carefully after bathing, so you really get the salt off the skin.

Swimming in the sea

Seawater is rich in trace elements and minerals and has a composition that is not so different from human blood plasma.

Undoubtedly, seawater has many unique healing properties for the skin. Many of these properties specifically apply to the Dead Sea, where treatment for eczema and psoriasis is well established.

However, it is not only positive to stay seawater. Exposure to high levels of salt can dry out the skin.

Salt that has ended up on the skin can be very difficult to get rid of with ordinary soaps, and therefore there are often traces of salt on the skin even after showering, salt that absorbs moisture.

In combination with excessive sunbathing, it easily leads to the skin becoming dehydrated and impaired barrier function.

A day at the pool

Chlorine is a toxic chemical, which has been used to fight diseases for over 100 years. It is a disinfectant needed as an additive in pool water.

However, chlorine is tough on the skin and deprives it of its natural fat layer. It leads to fluid loss from the skin and dehydration.

Another risk when bathing in chlorinated water is skin irritation and contact dermatitis. However, showering immediately after bathing in chlorinated water reduces the risk of these side effects somewhat.

As I have already mentioned, salt water is good for the skin and can also help with acne. Salt water contains minerals, vitamins and also has a bactericidal effect and therefore works well against acne and pimples. It is enough to use salt water 1-2 times a week.

Salt water does not remove the problem of acne and pimples but only helps the existing acne that is already on the skin. Acne can be caused by several different things like hormones, illness, medication, dryness and stress. This does not help salt water against.

How to treat acne with salt water?

There are many home remedies that can help with acne, one of which is to wash your face in salt water, make your own face mask from sea salt or treat the problem area – it is both easy and cheap.

How to make your own toner with salt

All you need is a saucepan, water and sea salt.

  1. Pour 1 dl of water into a saucepan
  2. Add 1 teaspoon of salt (you can add more depending on how durable your skin is)
  3. Bring to the boil over medium heat until the salt has dissolved
  4. Then let your salt water cool down
  5. When the water has cooled, you can pour it into a small spray bottle (you can buy small spray bottles at Kicks or Åhléns)

Before spraying the salt water mist over your face, wash your face first. Then spray the mist all over your face – close your eyes so you do not get in the eyes – it can sting.

Let it dry for 10 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water, wipe your face and continue with your moisturizer.

How to make your own saltwater mask

What you need is aloe vera gel, sea salt and a bowl.

  1. Pour some aloe vera gel into a bowl
  2. Add 1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt (Here too you can have more salt depending on what your skin tolerates)
  3. Mix until the salt has dissolved, the mixture will be very runny
  4. Then apply on cleansed face. Let sit for 30 minutes, it will then have turned into a white mask. Wash off with lukewarm water and continue with your moisturizer.

It is important that the salt you use is sea salt. Look at the table of contents.

Use salt water as a body scrub

Use only salt as a body scrub. Add a little salt immediately after showering while the skin is still wet. Gently massage the salt into the skin, it will remove dead skin cells.

You can use any kind of salt, but not too coarse as it can tear the skin.

Remember to wash yourself thoroughly afterwards after you have scrubbed yourself with salt.

Do I have to shower after bathing in salt water?

You do not need to wash the salt off your body after a swim in the sea or a lake because it does not clog the pores.

On the other hand, the salt water has a drying effect on the skin, so if you bathe often in salt water, it is good if you shower afterwards so that you get the salt away properly from the body.

It is also not so nice to walk around with salt water on the body because the salt crystals that form when it dries can chafe. Also be sure to lubricate yourself with body lotion afterwards.

Water with chlorine

If you have bathed in a swimming pool where they have chlorine in, it is best to shower thoroughly with clean water afterwards. Chlorine can irritate both the skin and the eyes.

Is salt water good for wounds?

If you have a wound on your skin, it can hurt if you expose it to salt water. Saline (saline) is sometimes used to treat minor wounds and other injuries, as it counteracts infections and speeds up the healing process of damaged tissues.

Salt water has antibacterial properties that help eliminate infections, while zinc helps speed up the wound healing process.

Do not use seawater on open wounds

However, it is important not to use water directly from the sea as it may contain bacteria that can cause infections in your wounds.

Therefore, always mix the sea salt with boiled water or use a ready-made saline solution if you have open wounds.

How to make your own saline solution:

It is important that you wash your hands thoroughly before and that the saucepan and spray bottle you are going to use are properly cleaned.

All you need to do is dissolve 1 cream of salt in a saucepan of boiled water (1 liter).

  1. Mix salt and water in a saucepan
  2. Boil so that the salt dissolves completely
  3. When your saline solution is ready, store it in a spray bottle or glass bottle in the refrigerator with a tight – closed lid

You should store the saline solution for a maximum of 24 hours if you intend to use it on wounds.
